Rep. Molinaro Introduces Bill to Stop Gov. Hochul From Using Schools As Shelters for Migrants

Washington, DC U.S. Rep. Marc Molinaro (NY-19) today introduced the Schools Not Shelters Act, a bill to stop Governor Kathy Hochul from using schools to shelter migrants. Rep. Molinaro introduced this bill as Governor Hochul is planning to house migrants in SUNY college dorms in Upstate New York and as public school gymnasiums are currently being used as shelters.

Rep. Molinaro’s bill will prohibit schools that receive federal funding from being used as shelters for migrants. The prohibition would prevent SUNY colleges, high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools from being used for this purpose.

Rep. Molinaro said, “I’m fighting to stop Governor Hochul from using schools and colleges as shelters for migrants. Upstate New York taxpayers pay thousands of dollars to support our public education system. SUNY college students pay thousands of dollars for room and board. Our schools are not shelters.”
